Bids for Connection (Turning Toward vs. Away vs. Against)
Bids are small invitations for connection. Responses can engage, miss, or reject the invitation, providing a useful way to examine everyday interaction.
A bid for connection is an attempt to share attention, interest, affection, or support. Gottman’s framework distinguishes engaging with the bid, missing or ignoring it, and responding with hostility. The useful unit is a small interaction: someone offers an opening, and another person responds in a way that can sustain or interrupt connection.
Acknowledgment can coexist with a boundary. Someone who is concentrating can say they would like to hear the story after finishing, then follow through. A sigh is not a transparent message whose meaning must be guessed correctly. Making requests explicit and asking what would help can be more useful than treating every missed signal as rejection. Research group averages are not a quota for individual couples.
When to use it
When ordinary moments of connection are repeatedly missed or when people need a clearer way to ask for attention.
How it can help
Notice invitations, clarify ambiguous requests, and respond with attention or an honest boundary followed by any promised return.
