Love Maps (Deep Knowledge of Partner's Inner World)

Love maps are a metaphor for a current, revisable understanding of a partner’s life, concerns, and preferences, developed through attention and conversation.

A love map is Gottman’s metaphor for what you know about a partner’s current concerns, preferences, relationships, and aspirations. The central practice is updating that understanding through attention and conversation. Remembering an old preference is useful only while it still fits the person; a map can become stale even when contact is frequent.

Treat the understanding as provisional and freely correctable. A partner can choose what to share, and knowing private information does not confer authority over their choices. In friendship or work, the analogous practice should fit the relationship: asking what support would help is different from collecting intimate details. The measure is whether understanding improves an appropriate response.

When to use it

When familiar assumptions have become stale or someone feels misunderstood despite frequent contact.

How it can help

Ask relevant questions, listen for changes, check assumptions, and use what is voluntarily shared to respond more considerately.
