Cascading Failures in Networks

Cascading failures propagate when a disruption changes load, dependencies, or responses in ways that cause further failures.

A cascading failure occurs when one disruption changes conditions in a way that produces further failures. Load redistribution is one mechanism: work moves from a failed component to others that cannot absorb it. Dependency loss, control responses, and common constraints can produce other cascades. A diagram of connections alone does not establish which mechanism operates.

Analyze the sequence, capacities, and responses rather than assuming that every connected system is fragile. Spare capacity can help, but duplicated components may share the same vulnerability, and extra links can create new propagation routes. A useful intervention interrupts a specified failure path or preserves an essential function at an acceptable cost. Efficiency and resilience need concrete measures before their tradeoff can be assessed.
