Classifying Tipping Points

Lamberson and Page distinguish direct from contextual tips, and separately distinguish changes within an outcome class from changes between classes, using a discontinuity-based definition.

Lamberson and Page classify tipping points along two distinctions. A direct tip links a small change in a variable’s present value to a discontinuous change in its future value; a contextual tip links a change in another variable to that discontinuity. Separately, a tip can remain within an outcome class, such as one equilibrium to another, or change the class of behavior.

The classification requires naming the variable, what changes now, and what future behavior is being compared. Rapid growth alone need not be a tip under this definition: a smooth feedback process can accelerate sharply. Contagion is a possible mechanism that can be examined using the distinctions, not a third parallel category that replaces them. A useful label helps specify a model and a test.

When to use it

When a claim about a sudden system change needs a precise definition and a clearer account of the variables involved.

Specify the changing input, focal outcome, and future behavior before classifying a proposed tip or choosing what to monitor.
