Colonel Blotto Game

Colonel Blotto is a family of games about simultaneous allocation of limited resources across contests whose outcomes depend on relative allocations.

The Colonel Blotto game asks players to allocate limited resources across several contests at the same time. In a basic formulation, the larger allocation wins a contest and a specified rule combines contest results into a payoff. Because the opponent also allocates strategically, success depends on the pair of choices rather than concentration alone.

A smaller budget can sometimes win against a particular larger allocation, but that does not give the weaker player a general advantage. Concentrating leaves other contests exposed, and the opponent can also concentrate or vary their plan. Define budgets, values, ties, and the victory rule before reasoning about strategy. The model is most useful when it exposes allocation assumptions that would otherwise remain implicit.

When several competitive demands share a limited budget and relative resource deployment materially affects the outcome.
