Introduction To Growth

Growth models distinguish rules such as constant addition, constant proportional increase, and specific forms of capacity-limited change. Model choice should reflect the generating process and data; a short curve may not distinguish competing rules.

Growth models describe a changing quantity through a rule for its increment. Constant addition gives a straight line; a constant proportional increase gives exponential growth. A logistic model adds a particular dependence of proportional growth on remaining capacity. These are candidate mechanisms with parameters and units, not labels that can be reliably read from a short upward curve.

Inspect absolute increments and proportional changes over comparable periods, then ask what produces them and what constrains them. Several models may fit early observations similarly yet imply very different later paths. Use those differences to plan observations and scenarios. A physical limit does not establish a logistic equation, and no familiar curve determines a complete strategy by itself.

When to use it

When growth processes need to be categorized for appropriate strategy; when the difference between linear and exponential projections would change decisions; when carrying capacity needs identification; when understanding why different growth types require different management approaches.

How it can help

Examine increments, proportional changes, mechanisms, and constraints. Compare plausible conditional scenarios and identify observations that would distinguish them. Do not infer a logistic model merely because a limit exists.
