Network Function
Network function emerges from connection structure together with the process, node properties, edge meanings, capacities, and timing. Structural features can enable or constrain flow and coordination, but their effects depend on what travels or changes across the network.
A network's function depends on the process using its connections. A short path can carry a message quickly if one contact is sufficient, while behavior requiring reinforcement from several neighbors may spread differently. Direction, capacity, timing, node behavior, and the meaning of an edge all matter alongside overall topology.
Start with the task: reach, coordination, transport, resilience, or another outcome. Then identify which connections enable or constrain that task. A highly connected node is not automatically the most influential, and a bridge need not control all flow when alternatives exist. Compare changes using the actual process rather than ranking networks by a single structural statistic.
When to use it
When understanding how information, influence, or resources flow through a system; when organizational network structure needs analysis; when identifying key nodes whose removal would disrupt the system; when network design needs to optimize for specific functions.

Map the connections relevant to the task and analyze how the actual process uses them. Inspect paths, capacities, bridging roles, and alternatives before choosing a structural change.
