Path Dependence and Chaos

Path dependence concerns persistent effects of history, while chaos concerns sensitive dependence within specified deterministic dynamics. They can coexist and do not divide all systems into eventual lock-in versus endless wandering.

Path dependence concerns how histories affect later possibilities or outcomes; chaos concerns sensitive dependence in specified deterministic dynamics, usually with sustained aperiodic behavior on an attractor. They are not a simple division between systems that eventually lock in and systems that never settle. Historical dependence can arise without chaos, and nonlinear systems are not automatically chaotic.

Identify the proposed mechanism and the prediction being attempted. Reinforcement may change which technology accumulates support; sensitivity to initial conditions may limit how far a trajectory can be forecast at a given measurement precision. Both claims need evidence. An irregular time series alone cannot distinguish chaos, random shocks, changing rules, or omitted variables, and broad labels do not supply a strategy by themselves.

When to use it

When different mechanisms could explain sensitivity, persistent differences, or irregular trajectories and distinguishing them would change the analysis.

How it can help

Identify the actual source of uncertainty or historical influence before selecting a response. Test reinforcement, constraints, shocks, and dynamical sensitivity separately; retain useful short-term and statistical predictions where supported.
