Probability The Basics

Probability provides coherent rules for uncertainty over defined events. Conditional probability, independence, and expectation support calculation when the model and inputs are justified; exact arithmetic does not eliminate uncertainty about those inputs.

Probability assigns coherent numerical weights to events within a specified model: probabilities are nonnegative, the whole outcome space has probability one, and disjoint alternatives add. Calculations can be exact within an invented model while estimates for a real event remain uncertain. Defining the event and the information available is therefore part of the reasoning.

Conditional probability changes the information under which an event is assessed. Independence means the relevant joint probability factors into the product of marginal probabilities, not merely that two events happen at different times. Use sums for mutually exclusive alternatives and appropriate joint or conditional probabilities for combinations. Expected value combines all possible outcomes, but a decision may also depend on risk, constraints, and consequences beyond the average.

When to use it

When decisions involve uncertainty that needs to be quantified rather than ignored; when probabilistic reasoning would improve prediction over binary thinking; when Bayesian updating would incorporate new evidence more effectively; when expected value calculations would improve decision quality.

How it can help

Define events carefully, use the appropriate addition or multiplication rule, and distinguish conditional from unconditional probabilities. Evaluate evidence for the inputs and consider the full consequences of a decision rather than expected value alone.
