Problem solving and innovation can be analyzed as searches over possible actions, designs, or representations. Complementary heuristics and combinations may reveal useful candidates, which still require evaluation against the task's purpose and constraints.
A search model of problem solving defines candidate solutions, allowed moves, and a way to evaluate results. Innovation can involve new combinations, new representations, or new capabilities, but it still needs a problem or purpose against which usefulness can be assessed. Novelty alone does not establish an improvement.
Different search methods can escape different local dead ends. The benefit depends on whether the alternative method reveals feasible candidates and whether the solver can evaluate them. More perspectives and more attempts also cost time. Preserve a simple useful approach when it works, and introduce another search route when a concrete obstacle or overlooked possibility justifies it.
When to use it
When a search repeats unhelpful candidates or a new representation or combination could expose a feasible improvement.
How it can help
Identify a concrete obstacle in the current search and try a complementary method targeted at it. Evaluate candidates and account for coordination and analysis costs rather than maximizing variety or requiring a fixed number of perspectives.
