Complementary problem-solving approaches can help a team escape shared local obstacles. Hong and Page demonstrate an advantage of diverse modeled solvers under specified assumptions, rather than a universal superiority of diverse real-world teams.
A team can improve search when one member finds a useful move from a point where another is stuck. The relevant diversity is therefore complementary ways of representing the problem and searching its alternatives. A collection of strong individual performers can still have overlapping blind spots, while a different mix may reach more useful candidates.
Hong and Page's formal result operates under specific assumptions about the problem space, solver abilities, diversity, and collaboration process. It is not a hiring theorem or proof that any diverse group beats experts. Real teams must communicate, preserve useful differences, and evaluate contributions; the costs and benefits of those processes need evidence.

When team composition needs to optimize for problem-solving quality; when understanding why diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones on complex problems; when team process needs to elicit rather than suppress diverse perspectives; when the Diversity Trumps Ability theorem applies (complex, multi-faceted problems).
