The Logic of Network Formation
Network-formation models connect link creation and removal rules with resulting patterns. Similarity, opportunity, introductions, attachment, and strategic incentives can coexist and produce overlapping structures.
Network formation asks how links are created, maintained, and removed. Similarity, shared opportunities, introductions, preferential attachment, and strategic incentives can generate overlapping patterns. A clustered snapshot cannot reveal which mechanism produced it without information about timing and available alternatives.
Individual incentives need not produce a network that maximizes collective value. A useful link may impose costs on its endpoints while benefiting others, and a stable pattern can therefore be inefficient. For a practical change, identify a particular missing or costly connection and the mechanism limiting it rather than assuming more links or more central contacts are always better.
When to use it
When understanding why a network has its current structure; when network design needs to produce specific structural properties; when echo chamber dynamics need countering through deliberate heterophilous connection; when organizational network structure needs intentional shaping.

Define links, inspect their formation history and available opportunities, and compare mechanisms before changing the process. Evaluate function and maintenance costs as well as topology.
