Equivalence
Different representations are equivalent only with respect to a specified property and domain, such as equal values, the same solution set, or matching observable behavior. Practical alternatives can agree on one measure and differ on other consequences.
Equivalence is always relative to a defined relation: equal numerical values, the same solution set, identical logical truth conditions, or matching behavior for specified inputs. Two representations can be equivalent in one respect while differing in cost, timing, side effects, or ease of use. Name the preserved property before declaring a distinction irrelevant.
Transformations can expose a simpler route to a solution, but their conditions matter. Dividing by an expression that might be zero can remove valid cases. Similarly, two operational proposals with equal totals may distribute effort differently. Equivalence testing should preserve the domain and all decision-relevant consequences.
When to use it
When teams debate two options that may be functionally identical. When a problem seems intractable in one form (restate it—an equivalent form might be solvable). When simplifying complex situations.

Define what must be preserved, compare boundary cases and side effects, and use transformations that maintain the original conditions.
