Pareto Principle

The Pareto principle suggests checking for concentrated contributions, often summarized heuristically as eighty-twenty. Actual shares vary, and a Pareto chart ranks observed categories rather than proving a universal distribution.

The Pareto principle is a prompt to check whether contributions or problems are concentrated among a relatively small set of categories. A Pareto chart ranks a defined measure and shows cumulative shares. The 80/20 ratio is a heuristic, not a universal law or proof that the data follow a Pareto distribution.

Concentration alone does not identify the best intervention. The most frequent problem may be cheap to tolerate, while a rare problem is costly; a high-revenue customer may also require high support effort. Examine marginal value, dependencies, and changeability before prioritizing. Repeating 80/20 within the top group has no general justification without further evidence.

When to use it

When resource allocation needs to prioritize the vital few over the trivial many; when identifying the highest-leverage inputs would dramatically improve output; when 80/20 analysis would reveal where disproportionate effort is being wasted; when the fractal application of Pareto would identify the ultra-high-leverage activities.

Measure contributions or burden, calculate actual cumulative shares, and compare intervention value, cost, severity, and dependencies before prioritizing.
