Principle of Least Effort (Zipf's Law)

The principle of least effort proposes that effort tradeoffs influence behavior, including communication. Zipf's law is a related approximate rank-frequency pattern in which frequency decreases with rank according to a power relationship. The behavioral principle and the statistical regularity are distinct claims.

The principle of least effort proposes that effort tradeoffs help shape behavior. Zipf applied it to communication, where shortening an expression may reduce a speaker's work while increasing a listener's ambiguity. The relevant burden is the whole task and the people involved, not simply the number of visible actions on one screen.

Zipf's law is a related empirical rank-frequency pattern, often approximately inverse in word-frequency data. It is not identical to the behavioral principle, and the most frequent word is not exactly twice the second in every corpus. Use effort analysis to form design hypotheses, then test comprehension, errors, and recovery alongside speed.

When comparing communication or interface designs, analyzing rank-frequency data, or evaluating a proposed effort-based explanation of behavior.
