Scale

Scale concerns how properties and behavior change as a system's size changes. Relationships may be linear or nonlinear because of geometry, resource constraints, interactions, and other specific mechanisms. Their form and range must be established for the system in question.

Scale asks how a relationship changes when a system becomes larger or smaller. Some quantities change proportionally, while geometry, interaction counts, bottlenecks, and coordination can produce different rates. Under geometric similarity, doubling every linear dimension multiplies surface area by four and volume by eight; those factors follow from geometry, not from a universal business law.

Before transferring an approach, identify which variables scale and which remain fixed. A larger user population can change load without changing the software's logic, while a larger organization may need different coordination. Similar appearance at two sizes does not guarantee similar behavior. Use a mechanism-specific calculation or trial instead of assuming that growth always requires the same structural transition.

When adapting a design to a larger or smaller setting, estimating capacity, or investigating unexpected constraints during growth.
