Dose-Response Relationship

A dose-response relationship links a defined exposure level with a specified outcome. The curve's shape depends on the agent, endpoint, timing, and population, and benefits and harms can follow different relationships.

A dose-response relationship describes how a specified outcome changes with the amount, concentration, intensity, or duration of an exposure. Different outcomes can follow different curves for the same exposure, and timing or individual characteristics can alter them. A curve may rise, fall, plateau, or change direction; it need not contain one ideal middle dose.

First define the dose and response rather than assuming that more is better or worse. In medicine, exposure in the body can differ between people receiving the same administered dose. In organizational analogies, frequency, duration, and quality may be separate dimensions. Apparent improvement at higher doses also requires checking whether selection or other differences explain the association.

When to use it

When evaluating how an exposure or intervention's amount relates to outcomes and whether additional input changes benefits or harms.

How it can help

Define dose and response precisely, inspect evidence across levels, and distinguish administered dose from actual exposure. In nonclinical applications, identify frequency, duration, quality, and context separately.
