Hormesis (Low-Dose Stimulation, High-Dose Inhibition)
Hormesis is a biphasic dose-response pattern involving differing responses at lower and higher exposure levels for a specified endpoint. Stimulation at low exposure is not automatically beneficial, and the pattern's presence and implications require evidence.
Hormesis describes a biphasic dose-response pattern in which lower and higher exposures have different directional effects on a specified endpoint. The word stimulation does not necessarily mean a health benefit: increasing cell growth, for example, is desirable in some contexts and undesirable in others. The agent, organism, timing, and endpoint must all be stated.
A demonstrated pattern in one experiment does not establish that an unknown stressor is beneficial in small amounts or that adversity strengthens everyone. Adaptive responses and harms can coexist, and short-term marker changes may not establish long-term benefit. Use hormesis to evaluate a specific evidence claim, keeping broad learning or organizational challenge analogies explicitly separate from biological proof.

When evaluating evidence of a biphasic biological response or checking whether a proposed stress-benefit analogy preserves its limits.
