Microbiome as Ecosystem
The microbiome can be studied as an ecosystem of microorganisms interacting with a host and environment. Community composition and function vary by site and person, and their relationships with health require specific evidence.
The microbiome lens examines communities of microorganisms, their functions, and their interactions with a host and environment. Composition varies across body sites and people, so there is no single universal healthy mixture or rule that more diversity is always better. Measuring which organisms are present also differs from establishing what they are doing.
Ecological thinking prompts attention to context and indirect effects, but it does not make every observed association causal. A disease can alter a microbial community, the community can influence disease, or other factors can affect both. Targeted treatment can remain necessary despite ecosystem effects. Organizational analogies may encourage dependency mapping, but they do not inherit biological evidence about health.
