Flywheel

A business metaphor for cumulative, reinforcing progress through repeated aligned effort. A useful application identifies how earlier work improves the conditions for later work. The metaphor does not establish automatic acceleration, effortless operation, or a guarantee that continued effort will succeed.

The business metaphor asks whether successive efforts make later efforts more productive. A useful loop names the returning link: better service might improve trust, which supports repeat business, which funds further service improvements. Without that return path, a circular drawing may be only a list of desirable activities.

The mechanical image should not be read literally. A physical flywheel stores energy and loses some to friction; a business requires continuing work and resources. A reinforcing process can slow, saturate, or reverse as conditions change. Before urging people to push harder, check whether the links operate and whether the resulting growth remains useful.

When planning a repeatable service, learning practice, growth process, or shared activity whose outcomes may affect the next cycle.
