Circle of Security (Attachment Framework)

Circle of Security helps caregivers reflect on a child's needs for supported exploration and comfort. It represents secure-base and safe-haven functions within a broader relationship, rather than diagnosing attachment from one behavior.

Circle of Security uses the image of a child moving between exploration and seeking comfort to help caregivers notice attachment-related needs. A caregiver can support exploration as a secure base and welcome the child's return as a safe haven. These are complementary functions, not a demand that every child follow a predictable outward-and-back sequence.

The framework is a reflection and intervention tool, not a brief diagnostic test. Temperament, context, history, and the broader relationship matter, and one missed response does not determine an attachment classification. Focus on noticing the current need and responding helpfully. Claims about a particular program's effectiveness require evidence for that version and outcome.
