Freemium

A business model that provides a basic offering without a monetary charge while charging for additional features, capacity, service, or access. Sustainability depends on whether paid demand and any other revenue support the costs of the whole offering.

Freemium separates access to a useful basic offering from payment for additional value. Its viability depends on the combined economics of free and paying users, including support, infrastructure, acquisition, and continued development. A high number of signups can conceal an expensive service with too little paid demand.

The free tier and paid tier should have clear purposes. A basic version can be useful in its own right while a paid version serves larger or more demanding needs. Evaluate why someone would willingly upgrade and whether the ongoing value justifies the price. Deliberately creating dependency is not a necessary feature of the model, and free access can still involve attention, privacy, or switching costs.
