A Cascade of Homunculi

Dennett's cascade replaces an unexplained inner observer with increasingly limited functional components whose operations can ultimately be explained mechanically. Its aim is to avoid reproducing the original cognitive mystery inside each part.

An explanation is circular when it gives an internal component the very ability being explained. Saying that an inner observer reads a mental picture leaves the work of seeing untouched. Functional decomposition becomes useful when each component performs a narrower operation and their coordination accounts for the larger capability.

The stopping point is an implementable mechanism, not an indefinitely smaller person. An engineering diagram can still hide the central difficulty in a box called interpretation or judgment. Ask what each box receives, changes, and passes on, and whether the resulting system actually performs the target task under relevant conditions.

When to use it

Use when a cognitive explanation is circular or when designing and evaluating a proposed decomposition of a complex capability.

How it can help

Locate boxes in an explanation that secretly require the whole target ability. Specify narrower operations, their interfaces, and evidence that their coordination can produce the relevant behavior.
