Folk Psychology

Folk psychology is everyday explanation and prediction using beliefs, desires, intentions, emotions, and related concepts. Its interpretations can be useful while remaining revisable and distinct from a detailed account of underlying mechanisms.

Everyday explanations often connect behavior to what someone believes, wants, intends, or feels. These descriptions can organize useful predictions without exposing the underlying neural mechanism. The same action can fit several accounts, so the confidence of an attribution should depend on more than how natural the story sounds.

Use mental-state language as a revisable interpretation. Ask what the person actually said, what circumstances constrain them, and what else would be expected if the attribution were right. Checking a relevant belief or intention respectfully can be more useful than constructing an elaborate theory from an ambiguous signal.

When to use it

Use when an attribution of motive or emotion is driving a consequential response, or when studying how intentional explanations work.

How it can help

Separate observations from inferred mental states, consider relevant alternatives, and check important assumptions through context and communication.
