Genes as Words or as Subroutines

Dennett compares genes with linguistic units and computational routines to explore how sequence contributes to larger functional organization. Both analogies are limited: genetic effects depend on cellular and environmental context, and software routines also have dependencies.

Words emphasize how the contribution of a sequence depends on surrounding organization; subroutines emphasize repeatable functional roles within a larger process. Both analogies can help ask questions about genes, but neither makes a gene an independent miniature agent that reads instructions and executes a trait.

Genes participate in cellular systems through regulated molecular processes, and their effects depend on context. Software subroutines also depend on inputs, shared state, and runtime assumptions.
