Manifest Image and Scientific Image

Sellars distinguishes the manifest framework of persons and everyday objects from a scientific framework of theoretical explanation, asking how they can form a coherent understanding of the world.

The manifest image organizes a world of persons, purposes, objects, and reasons for action. The scientific image develops theoretical accounts of the processes that make that world possible. Sellars's distinction asks how these perspectives can be brought into a coherent view rather than assuming either is merely an optional vocabulary.

Some descriptions operate at different levels, while others make claims that genuinely conflict. Identify the question each description answers and where evidence requires revision. A causal account of a promise's production does not by itself settle the promise's normative significance, just as everyday appearance does not settle a physical mechanism.
