The Intentional Stance

The intentional stance predicts behavior by attributing beliefs and goals under suitable rationality assumptions. Dennett contrasts it with physical and design stances and argues that successful intentional descriptions can capture real patterns.

The intentional stance predicts a system by asking what it would do given attributed information and goals, under an assumption of enough rationality for the task. This can compress a complex causal account into a useful forecast. It is one strategy alongside physical prediction and prediction from a system's design.

Choose the stance by its explanatory and predictive value, then test its assumptions. A system may have conflicting objectives, missing information, or unreliable procedures. Useful belief-and-goal language need not establish human-like experience, while Dennett's broader position treats successful patterns as more than arbitrary fiction.

When to use it

Use when a belief-and-goal interpretation compresses a complex behavioral prediction and when its assumptions can be checked.
