The Library of Mendel: Vast and Vanishing

The Library of Mendel represents genomes within a vast combinatorial sequence space. It helps distinguish possible descriptions from functional biological arrangements and the historically accessible paths among them.

A genome can be pictured as one sequence among an enormous set of possible sequences. For a fixed length and four-symbol alphabet, the number of strings grows exponentially. The size of the space does not by itself determine search difficulty or the fraction of useful designs. Structure, constraints, starting points, neutral changes, and accessible transitions matter.
