The Tree of Life

The tree of life represents evolutionary relationships through common descent. Particular phylogenies are inferred from evidence and may simplify histories that also involve horizontal transfer or hybridization.

A phylogenetic tree represents hypothesized relationships of descent, not a ladder from inferior to superior organisms. Branching order expresses shared ancestry, while branch lengths may carry additional meaning only if the diagram specifies it. Rotating branches around a node does not change the represented relationships.

Real histories can include transfer, hybridization, and other connections that a single tree simplifies. In cultural or technical analogies, distinguish documented descent from resemblance and allow a network when sources combine. Lineage can explain inherited features without predicting future success or proving that an older branch is more primitive in every respect.
