These thought experiments examine how a device's function, a word's reference, and an autonomous robot's goals depend on environment, history, and purpose as well as internal organization.
A mechanism's physical transitions do not by themselves specify what it is supposed to recognize or accomplish. Function and reference can depend on deployment, learning history, environment, and the purposes that shaped its design. These factors help distinguish a successful response from the same response counted as an error.
The three thought experiments press different aspects of that issue rather than proving that context overrides structure. For practical analysis, describe a system's operations and the standards that make those operations meaningful. In autonomous systems, distinguish a designer's initial purpose from the subsidiary goals the system actually pursues.
When to use it
Use when physically similar responses receive different functional interpretations, or when arguments about meaning ignore deployment and history.
How it can help
Specify what counts as success or error, whose purpose supplies that standard, and how the system became connected to its environment.
