Two Black Boxes

Dennett's connected boxes use different internal representations but coordinate responses through overlapping represented content. Their regularity becomes intelligible when described in terms of what their messages and stored claims mean.

A system can have a fully traceable physical mechanism while its most useful explanatory regularity concerns represented content. In Dennett's two connected boxes, different internal encodings support coordinated responses because the systems represent much of the same subject matter. Meaning-level description helps explain the pattern across many separate executions.

This is a reason to connect levels of explanation, not to disregard implementation. A content-level account must still identify what a system represents, how it handles discrepancies, and where its judgments are wrong. Agreement between databases is evidence of shared representation, not an automatic guarantee of truth or consciousness.
