Incremental Degradation

A pattern in which small changes accumulate into a meaningful decline in quality, reliability, or alignment with an intended standard. Comparing only with the most recent baseline can hide the total change. Normalization of deviance is related but concerns the acceptance of departures from a standard.

Small changes are easier to evaluate when compared with the purpose or standard they affect. A team may accept a little more delay each week until its service is far from what customers were promised. Comparing only with last week can hide the accumulated difference. Preserve a meaningful reference and inspect the whole trend.

Normalization of deviance is a related but more specific idea: departures from an accepted standard can become normal when they repeatedly occur without an obvious bad outcome. Not every gradual decline has that cause, and not every changed standard is inappropriate. Review whether the standard still serves its purpose and whether the process can realistically meet it.

When to use it

When many small exceptions have become routine, a performance trend is worsening, or current behavior no longer serves an endorsed purpose.
