What Is a Deepity?

A deepity gains apparent profundity by moving between a modest defensible reading and a stronger, unsupported or false reading. The diagnostic concerns this equivocation, not ambiguity or metaphor in general.

A deepity trades on an ambiguity between a modest, defensible reading and a much stronger reading that seems profound but has not been established. The persuasive force comes from slipping between those readings. Dennett's label is useful when it points to that exact move, rather than functioning as a general insult for language someone dislikes.

Begin by asking for a charitable clarification. A phrase may be poetic, compressed, exploratory, or contextually clear rather than deceptive. Rewrite the possible readings as separate claims and examine the evidence for each. If the strong claim survives clarification, the objection has done useful work without dismissing an insight; if only the weak claim is supported, reduce the conclusion accordingly.
