When Does Speciation Occur?
Speciation can involve gradual lineage divergence and partial reproductive isolation, but mechanisms and species criteria vary, and some reproductive barriers arise rapidly. A real process need not have a single universally agreed labeling moment.
Speciation is the formation of distinct evolutionary lineages, and its timing depends partly on the species concept and mechanism being considered. Reproductive isolation can accumulate across populations, leaving intermediate cases and ongoing gene flow. Some mechanisms, including changes in ploidy, can produce rapid barriers, so there is no single rule that every speciation event lacks a relatively sharp transition.
Dennett uses the topic to resist the assumption that a useful category must have an obvious first instance. The transferable lesson is to distinguish a real change in a system from the convention or criterion used to label its boundary. A practical threshold may still be necessary. State why it serves the decision, and avoid claiming that biological ambiguity proves all social or developmental categories are valid.
