Sustainability asks whether meeting present needs preserves the ecological and social conditions on which future needs depend. The Brundtland formulation connects development with intergenerational responsibility, rather than requiring every activity to continue unchanged forever. System boundaries, distribution, replenishment, and the time horizon all affect the assessment.
In a practical application, distinguish a renewable flow from a stock being drawn down, and identify burdens shifted outside the visible system. A temporary drawdown may be deliberate and manageable if its purpose, limits, and recovery are credible. A claim of sustainability needs assumptions and indicators, not merely a reassuring label. A stable local result can still depend on costs borne by suppliers, communities, or future users.

When present performance may deplete the resources or relationships needed for future functioning.
