Critical Mass
Critical mass is a condition-dependent threshold for sustaining a nuclear chain reaction. In social applications it is an analogy for a threshold whose mechanism must be established independently.
Critical mass is the smallest mass capable of sustaining a nuclear chain reaction under specified physical conditions. It is not a context-free quantity determined by mass alone. More generally, people use the phrase for a threshold at which a process becomes self-supporting, but that threshold needs its own mechanism and evidence.
For a community or product, distinguish total enrollment from the density, availability, and compatibility of interactions needed to keep participation useful. Different local groups may reach workable conditions at different sizes, and continuing effort can remain necessary afterward. A practical minimum for an activity is a coordination threshold; it does not acquire the precision or authority of nuclear physics merely by sharing the phrase.
