Half-life

Half-life is the time for a quantity to halve under specified decay conditions. Constant exponential decay gives repeated proportional halves; knowledge and skill applications require empirical definition rather than fixed topic rankings.

A half-life is the time required for a quantity to fall to half its initial value under a specified decay model. With a constant exponential rate, equal time intervals multiply the remaining quantity by the same fraction: one half, one quarter, one eighth. Radioactive decay describes the statistical behavior of many unstable nuclei, not a scheduled disappearance time for each one.

For information or skills, half-life is usually an empirical estimate or metaphor, not a universal constant. Define what is declining: accuracy, relevance, recall, or usefulness for a task. These can behave differently and can be refreshed. Learning value also depends on immediate need, frequency of use, and opportunities, so durable knowledge does not automatically dominate timely knowledge or yield a simple half-life-times-value return.

When a measurable quantity decays or when the changing relevance of information needs a clearly bounded review model.
