Momentum
Newtonian linear momentum is mass times velocity, a vector quantity changed by net external impulse. Social or organizational momentum is a metaphor requiring its own causal explanation.
Linear momentum in Newtonian mechanics is mass multiplied by velocity, so it includes direction. A net external impulse changes a system's total momentum; without it, total momentum is conserved. The same speed can therefore accompany different momentum vectors, and changing direction matters even when speed remains constant.
In organizations and habits, momentum is a metaphor for continuing activity, commitments, or reinforcing processes. Those mechanisms must be identified rather than assigned an imaginary mass and velocity. Early adjustment can sometimes be cheaper because fewer commitments have accumulated, but it is not infinitely easier by physical law. Momentum also does not prove that market trends will continue or that a large organization cannot change quickly.

When analyzing physical motion or investigating the concrete mechanisms sustaining a practical trajectory.
