Velocity

The rate of change of position with respect to time, including both SPEED (magnitude of motion) and DIRECTION. In physics: velocity is a VECTOR quantity (speed + direction), not just a scalar (speed alone). A car traveling 60 mph north has a different velocity than one traveling 60 mph east, even though their speeds are identical. As a mental model applied beyond physics: velocity thinking requires tracking not just HOW FAST you're moving but WHETHER YOU'RE HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Speed without direction is wasted motion. Many individuals and organizations optimize for speed (doing things faster) while neglecting direction (doing the right things)—producing high-speed movement toward the wrong destination.

Velocity measures displacement per unit time, with a direction relative to a reference frame. Average speed measures distance traveled per time. An entire round trip can therefore have zero average velocity and positive average speed; neither number alone describes everything useful about the trip.

As a planning analogy, track change in a specified outcome alongside activity. A task count is a throughput measure, not a physical velocity. Exploration, maintenance, and returning to a starting point can all be valuable, so define what progress means before treating a directional measure as a judgment of worth.

When to use it

When speed is being confused with progress; when direction confirmation should precede speed optimization; when organizational busyness is substituting for strategic progress; when the vector nature of progress (magnitude + direction) needs explicit tracking.

Track meaningful outcome change alongside activity, with explicit units, interval, and purpose. Preserve necessary maintenance and useful exploration.
