Conservation Laws (What's Conserved When Things Change)

Conservation laws preserve specified physical quantities under stated conditions. Beyond physics, a balance-sheet question can reveal transfers, while allowing totals that are not physically conserved to change.

A conservation law specifies a quantity whose total remains constant under stated conditions, such as total momentum when net external impulse is zero. Conservation of energy requires accounting for transfers and all relevant forms. A loss from one subsystem can be a gain elsewhere without disappearing from the larger accounting.

The practical habit is to write a balance before declaring a burden eliminated: beginning stock plus inflows, minus outflows, plus creation minus destruction equals ending stock. Social quantities may genuinely be created or removed. Workload, demand, trust, and human needs are not guaranteed conserved quantities; the investigation must allow their totals to change.

When to use it

When a claimed transformation needs a quantitative reconciliation or an explicit investigation of displaced costs.
