Resonance (When Small Inputs Produce Large Outputs)

The physics phenomenon where a small, periodic input at just the right frequency produces a disproportionately large response—a child's well-timed pushes on a swing produce huge arcs, and soldiers breaking step on bridges prevent resonant destruction. As a mental model: in any system with natural frequencies (market cycles, organizational rhythms, personal energy patterns), inputs timed to match the system's natural frequency produce amplified effects. Resonance explains why the same message at different times produces vastly different responses—timing that matches the system's receptivity amplifies impact; timing that doesn't, wastes it.

Resonance is a large oscillatory response to periodic driving near a system's resonant frequency. Response depends on damping, coupling, driving strength, and frequency; the energy still comes from the driver. A precisely timed tiny input does not create unlimited useful output in a real system.

The practical analogy is narrower than good timing: look for an actual recurring response pattern and a mechanism for repeated inputs to accumulate. A budget deadline is a decision window, not automatically an oscillator. Sometimes the useful action is to reduce or detune an unwanted resonance instead of amplify it.

When to use it

When good ideas aren't gaining traction (the timing may be wrong, not the idea); when the same input produces dramatically different results at different times; when designing launch timing, communication cadences, or change management sequences; when understanding why some moments are disproportionately impactful.
