Boiling Frog

An explicitly nonliteral warning about overlooking cumulative deterioration when small changes are compared only with the recent past.

The boiling-frog story is a metaphor about failing to respond to gradual deterioration, not a reliable account of frog behavior. Its useful question is whether small changes are being judged only against the immediately preceding state, allowing an earlier standard to fade from view.

Gradual change is not necessarily invisible or harmful, and repeated deviations need not be accepted. Retain a baseline, inspect trends, and define conditions for action. Normalization of deviance is a more specific organizational concern: repeated departures from expected practice can become accepted when adverse consequences have not yet occurred.
