Desirable Difficulty

Robert Bjork's counterintuitive finding that learning conditions that make initial performance worse often produce better long-term retention and transfer. Spacing practice over time (vs. massing), interleaving different topics (vs. blocking), and testing yourself (vs. rereading) all feel harder but produce superior learning. The insight: our subjective sense of learning fluency is a poor guide—easy-feeling study often creates an illusion of competence.

A desirable difficulty is a learning condition that can make practice performance less fluent while improving later retention or transfer. The crucial word is desirable: effort that promotes retrieval, discrimination, or reconstruction can help, while confusion, inaccessible materials, and missing prerequisites can simply obstruct learning.

Judge a difficulty by later performance on the intended task, not by immediate discomfort or the learner's confidence alone. Spacing, retrieval, variation, and interleaving have different mechanisms and boundary conditions. Introduce an appropriate challenge, preserve useful feedback, and reduce it when the learner cannot perform the relevant learning process.
