Dual Coding Theory (Verbal + Visual)

A theory proposing interconnected verbal and nonverbal representational systems that can support encoding and retrieval when the representations are meaningful.

Paivio's dual coding theory proposes distinguishable but interconnected verbal and nonverbal representational systems. Material that evokes useful imagery as well as verbal meaning may have additional ways to be encoded and retrieved. Nonverbal representation is not simply the presence of any picture beside text.

Instruction should connect an accurate representation to the explanation it supports. A relevant diagram can expose spatial or causal relations, while decoration, mismatched imagery, or redundant presentation can add demands. This is not evidence for fixed visual or verbal learner types, nor a rule to illustrate every sentence.

When to use it

When spatial, concrete, or relational information is difficult to understand or remember from words alone.

Use accurate, relevant imagery or diagrams when they clarify a relationship, connect them to the explanation, and test understanding beyond the display.
