Energy Cycles (Ultradian Rhythms)

Physiological ultradian rhythms occur within a day, but a fixed ninety-minute waking productivity cycle is not established for everyone.

Ultradian rhythms have periods shorter than a day; several physiological processes exhibit them. The proposal of an approximately ninety-minute waking rest–activity cycle should not be converted into a universal work schedule. Research on waking cognitive performance is mixed, including studies finding no significant ninety-minute periodicity.

A useful practical approach is to notice changing alertness, task demands, and need for breaks without assuming a biological stopwatch. Sleep, time of day, workload, environment, and individual circumstances can all influence performance. Flexible rest and workload adjustment can be tested directly; a ninety-minute focus and twenty-minute rest rule is not established for everyone.

When to use it

When a rigid schedule ignores changing fatigue or when a person wants to compare feasible work-and-break arrangements.
