Spacing Effect
Distributing learning episodes over time often improves later retention relative to comparable massed practice, with benefits dependent on material and timing.
The spacing effect is the frequent finding that distributing learning episodes across time supports later retention better than massing comparable practice together. The useful gap depends on what is learned, how well it is learned initially, and how long it must be retained. More separation is not always better.
Spacing can be combined with retrieval and feedback, but it is not identical to either. Repeated presentations can show spacing effects even without an explicit test, and a single universal expanding schedule is not optimal for every learner or skill. Plan returns to the material and judge the schedule through later performance.
When to use it
When learning new material that needs to be retained long-term; when training programs aren't producing lasting behavior change; when skill development has plateaued despite significant practice time; when designing learning systems, onboarding programs, or educational content.

Plan repeated learning opportunities and adjust gaps using later recall or performance rather than a universal interval recipe.
