Anchoring and Adjustment (Extended)
The extended model of anchoring beyond Tversky and Kahneman's original finding: anchoring doesn't just affect numerical estimates—it shapes entire frames of reference for evaluation. Initial anchors don't just bias the final number; they determine WHICH information gets attended to, which comparisons get made, and which categories get activated. A home listed at $500K activates comparison with other $500K homes and attention to features that justify that range—even if the home is worth $350K. The extended model shows that anchoring is not just a starting point adjustment but a frame-setting mechanism that shapes the entire evaluation process.
When to use it
When any numerical estimation or evaluation could be influenced by initial reference points; when negotiating and need to understand who controls the frame; when pricing strategy needs to account for anchor effects on customer perception; when evaluation processes need to minimize the influence of arbitrary starting points.
How it can help
Control the anchor, control the frame. In negotiations: the first number proposed shapes the entire subsequent discussion—make sure you set it (or at least prepare for it). In product pricing: the first price a customer sees becomes the reference point for all subsequent price evaluations. In performance reviews: the first piece of feedback discussed anchors the entire conversation. Defensively: when you receive an anchor (a first offer, a suggested price, an initial estimate), deliberately generate your OWN independent estimate before processing the anchor. The more you engage with someone else's anchor, the more it shapes your thinking.
