Availability Bias

Tversky and Kahneman's finding that people judge the frequency or probability of events based on how easily examples come to mind—and ease of recall is determined by vividness, recency, and emotional impact rather than actual frequency. Plane crashes are vivid and easily recalled, making air travel feel dangerous despite being statistically safer than driving. Dramatic startup successes are easily recalled, making entrepreneurship feel more likely to succeed than base rates suggest. The availability heuristic is useful (common things ARE generally easier to recall) but systematically distorted by media coverage, personal experience, and emotional salience.

When to use it

When risk perception seems disproportionate to statistical risk; when recent dramatic events are distorting probability estimates; when business decisions are being driven by the most memorable examples rather than representative data; when any frequency or probability estimate needs to be checked against base rates.

How it can help

When estimating frequency or probability: distrust your gut if the examples come too easily or too vividly. Ask: 'am I estimating frequency based on actual data or based on how easily I can think of examples?' After media coverage of a rare event (terrorist attacks, shark attacks, plane crashes), availability bias spikes—demand statistical base rates before adjusting behavior. In business: don't let the most recent or dramatic customer interaction define your understanding of the customer base—check the data. The correction: always supplement availability-based intuition with base rate data.
