The phenomenon where a known solution method prevents the discovery of a better one—your familiarity with one approach to a problem literally blocks you from seeing superior alternatives. In chess: players shown a problem with both a familiar (good) solution and an unfamiliar (better) solution consistently found the familiar one and stopped looking. When you find a solution: KEEP LOOKING. The Einstellung effect activates when you find your first viable solution and stop searching. The discipline: after finding one approach, spend 10% more time explicitly looking for a DIFFERENT type of solution. In brainstorming: generate solutions in two rounds—first round generates the familiar approaches (clearing the Einstellung effect), second round deliberately seeks unfamiliar ones. In hiring: if the first strong candidate matches your template, interview more candidates before deciding—the template is blocking you from seeing different-but-superior candidates.
