Hyperbolic Discounting
The systematic tendency to prefer smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later rewards—with the preference being disproportionately strong for immediate versus near-future rewards. The discounting function is hyperbolic, not exponential: people who can wait a year versus two years struggle enormously to wait a day versus a year. This produces preference reversals: you'd choose $110 in 31 days over $100 in 30 days, but you'd choose $100 NOW over $110 tomorrow. The immediacy of 'now' has disproportionate psychological weight. Hyperbolic discounting explains procrastination, addiction, under-saving, over-spending, and most failures of self-control.
When to use it
When present-self decisions consistently undermine future-self interests; when commitment to long-term plans dissolves in the moment; when designing incentive structures that need to motivate future-oriented behavior; when procrastination, impulse spending, or other self-control failures follow the pattern of preferring immediate comfort over delayed benefit.
How it can help
Design systems that counteract hyperbolic discounting. For savings: automatic payroll deductions remove the 'now vs. later' choice by making saving the default. For health: make healthy options the path of least resistance and unhealthy options require extra steps. For productivity: use commitment devices that bind your future self to follow through on your present self's plans (public commitments, deadlines, deposits). The meta-strategy: never rely on in-the-moment willpower to override hyperbolic discounting—it will lose. Instead, design the choice architecture in advance when you're not under the influence of 'now.'
